Winning Concrete Results

Keeping Our Families Safe From Dangerous Products

Those who violate product safety laws will face stiff fines and penalties and hazardous products will be removed from store shelves more quickly, under a landmark law championed by MoPIRG in 2008. Our members and staff helped overcome the last-minute opposition from the chemical industry.

Holding Elected Officials To Higher Ethical Standards

A new, independent office will police ethical scandals in Congress, under a plan endorsed by MoPIRG. Our staff helped make the case for the new Office of Congressional Ethics through a report showing that 23 states have independent panels to enforce ethics.

Repowering America With Wind And Solar

Across our nation and here in Missouri, workers are erecting wind turbines and installing solar equipment that will supply clean electricity to millions of homes, schools and offices. Our federal staff and members have helped win new laws in 28 states to help renewable energy grow. Now we’re urging President Obama and Congress to repower America by expanding clean energy nationwide.

Closing Contractor Loopholes

When private contractors, including Halliburton spin-off Kellogg Brown and Root (KBR), tried to avoid paying taxes by setting up foreign subsidiaries, MoPIRG backed a new law to close that loophole and another law requiring contractors to pay back taxes before being awarded new contracts.

Standing Up For Taxpayers & Homeowners

When Congress rushed to pass the $700 billion bailout for Wall Street banks, MoPIRG staff warned that the hastily conceived law lacked basic protections for taxpayers and assistance to homeowners. Later we worked to hold bankers and regulators accountable for fully disclosing how they spent the tax dollars they received.

Building The Clean Cars Of The Future

Imagine if cars that get better than 40 miles per gallon were the norm. By 2020, the new cars and trucks being sold in Missouri will meet this standards and emit 40 percent less carbon pollution, thanks to new policies won with our help.

Paving The Way For 21st Century Transportation

Passenger rail travel will improve and America will begin investing in a new generation of high-speed rail thanks to a MoPIRG-backed law that authorizes $13 billion in spending over the next five years, a small step in a shift toward public transit and away from wasteful new highway projects.

Holding Drugmakers Accountable For Safety

The FDA reform bill adopted by Congress in 2007 included several MoPIRG-backed provisions that force drug companies to post all clinical trial results, good and bad—an antidote to such notorious cases as Vioxx, Paxil and Avandia. The new law also increases penalties for drug companies that rush unsafe drugs to market.

STANDING UP FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT—MoPIRG has repeatedly fought off attempts to allow logging and drilling in places such as Mark Twain National Forest.

STANDING UP FOR TAX PAYERS—We called on Congress to hold insurance giant AIG and Wall Street banks accountable for the billions of dollars of bailout money they received.

ADVOCACY AT THE CAPITOL—MoPIRG and our federation counter the influence of powerful special interests and their lobbyists.
